Sand Castle Contest, Hanalei, Kauai - KVIC-TV, myKauai.com
Annual Sand Castle Contest at Hanalei Bay, Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii. It's a fun, family-friendly activity for visitors and locals.
Julian Miller and Jeff Peterson established the contest in 2010. They discuss it's progression and give tips for making a sand castle stand out.
Tip 1: Add lots and lots of water. Moisture helps keep the sand together. "A sand sculpture needs more water than you think it needs. For example, in the Aloha sign we put in over 100 gallons of water."
Tip 2: Put in the details. "The bricks, the rocks, putting in some stairs, it's pretty easy, but it adds a lot of detail and makes them stand out."
"It's nice for everybody to be able to get outside, to play with their families, to have an opportunity to build and be creative, do something artistic and three-dimensional."
"The competition makes you rise to another level, it's more fun, you have to put more thought into it, and hope that it doesn't collapse before the judges see it."
