Immerse in Nature's Palette: Dawn Lundquist's Plein Air Painting
I'm Dawn Lundquist, a renowned local artist with a growing following of around 1800 people. Though I've only been painting for 25 years, my artistic journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Prior to embracing my passion for art, I was a successful businesswoman, involved in various ventures such as owning a computer company, running a multi-level brazier and lingerie company, and working as a stockbroker.
When I first began taking painting lessons, little did I know that it would become my true calling. In fact, I eventually became partners with my teacher and painted 365 pieces in my first year alone. Surprisingly, I managed to sell every single one of them, and at quite affordable prices. These days, my artwork of this size goes for around $500, a testament to the progress I've made over the years.
One of my favorite ways to paint is en plein air, which means capturing the essence of the outdoors. I find inspiration in the gentle breeze, the play of sunlight, and above all, the vibrant colors that surround us. While painting from photographs has its merits, it often fails to capture the true depth and richness of colors. My goal as an artist is to transport you to the exact place and moment I'm depicting and show you the world as I see it.
Painting, at its core, is about learning how to see. We all have preconceived notions about colors and objects, but these can hinder our ability to truly observe and depict what is in front of us. As children, we're taught that apples are red, grass is green, water is blue, and the sky is blue. However, as we grow older, these fixed perceptions can limit our artistic vision. By letting go of these notions and truly seeing the world around us, we unlock our artistic potential.
My artistic style can be best described as impressionistic, and I primarily work with a palette knife, which adds texture and depth to my creations. Currently, I'm immersed in painting a captivating scene at Anini Beach, one of my favorite locations to paint. The ever-changing turquoise hues of the water fascinate me, and I strive to capture their beauty on canvas.
Aside from creating art, I also offer private painting lessons, often conducted on the beach for a truly immersive experience. Additionally, I teach group lessons at various resorts such as Hanalei Bay Resort and Wyndam Resort. On Kauai island, you can find my works displayed at Amy Lauren's gallery in Hanapepe, Kilohana, and the Artist Gallery of Kauai in Hanalei. I also participate in art shows, including the Hanalei River Fair every Sunday, which provides a relaxed and enjoyable environment to showcase and sell my artwork while connecting with wonderful people.
