Tin Tin Teaches: Weaving a Stunning Grasshopper from Coconut Leaves
Welcome to Tin Tin Teaches, where today I, Tin Tin Puulei, will show you how to weave coconut leaves to make a grasshopper. To start, you'll need scissors and coconut leaves. Each grasshopper requires one coconut leaf, which you can obtain from shorter coconut trees, unless you have a way to climb taller trees. The height of coconut trees can range from 20 to 40 feet, so shorter trees are more accessible.
Begin by stripping the coconut leaf from the tip down to about halfway. This will leave you with two leaves and a spine. Lay the spine flat and create a crevice between the two leaves. Insert the end of the spine into this crevice, making sure it's secure. Flip it over, pinch the end with the spine between the leaves, and gently hold it.
Now, we'll proceed to fold and loop the leaves to create the grasshopper's body. Fold the leaves up and forward, repeating this step three times on each side. Make sure the loops are secure but not too tight, as you don't want to rip the leaf. This process will form the back of the grasshopper, resembling its shell.
To lock in the pattern, use a special fold loop technique on both sides. This will give you three shingles on each side. Flip it over and repeat the fold and loop process to cover the crease. The result should be a patterned back with shingles.
Next, we'll make the antennas. Cut a small portion from the spine, and rip the ends to create two thin antennas. Insert these ends through the two end leaves and pull them back, securing the antennas. Fold the antennas forward and crease them to complete their shape.
Finally, you can cut off the excess end of the spine. The grasshopper is almost complete! To finish, you can also create legs using the remaining portion of the leaf. Fold and crease the legs, and make sure everything is tight and secure. Trim any excess leaf, and there you have it—a beautiful grasshopper made from woven coconut leaves.
