Tip 1) Hawaii Color Palette - The Hawaiian color palette is different than those used in other parts of the country.

"People bring the colors of their homeland to Hawaii when painting Hawaii and oftentimes those colors aren't the colors we have here, for example, evergreens are prevalent in north america, so people use a lot of viridians whereas Hawaii has more olivey greens, like sap greens, so those are the colors you want to use when painting Hawaiian Foliage."

Tip 2) Painting Oceans & Water - Painting realistic-looking oceans take skill. "When painting oceans, I like to paint what's underneath first and what's on top last."

"The colors of the Hawaiian ocean are like a color wheel or rainbow, starting with the yellowish color of the sand, turning greener, then bluer, and even purpler at the deepest part of the ocean."

Tip 3) Creating Depth in a Painting - Creating a sense of depth can be a challenge for artists. "To create distance, I often use mountains."

"The further away a mountain is, the more of this moist air is in the mountain, so by adding you whites, purples, and blues to your far away mountains, you can create a lot of distance in your paintings. As your painting the far-away mountains, your color range gets really small and you use bluish, purplish colors. But as things get closer to you, the brights get brighter, the darks get darker, and the things closest to us have the highest highlights and the darkest darks."

Tip 4) Painting Skies - "There's so many lessons in the Hawaiian sky. As a sky gets higher, they get darker and more red or more purple. As the sky gets lower, you can add a little aqua green into that sky, which will contrast with the red of the upper sky. As the sky meets the horizon, you can put a pinkish purplish haze down there, representing the shadow colors of the clouds as they go over the curve of the earth. In that haze you can paint little clouds emerging, and as those clouds get higher and higher in the sky, they can get larger."
