Kupaoa is a traditional Hawaiian music duo comprised of Lee Hao and Kellen Pike, who have been performing together for over 17 years. Based in Kauai, this husband-and-wife team specializes in original compositions along with modern arrangements of traditional Hawaiian songs. Their music is characterized by acoustic guitar and bass, with harmonious vocals that create a rich sound despite being a duo. Inspired by the natural beauty of their island surroundings, many of their songs reflect the essence of Kauai.
The duo's musical journey began during their time at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where they initially met but did not connect until after graduation. Kupaoa was formed after a wedding performance opportunity arose, leading to an organic development of their musical partnership. Since then, they have enjoyed significant recognition in Hawaiian music, receiving multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including accolades for Most Promising Artist of the Year and several nominations for their albums.
In addition to their artistic achievements, Kupaoa has engaged in community-oriented initiatives, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. They created "Gemma Jams," a series of live performances aimed at uplifting the community spirit during challenging times. They also took the opportunity to establish a recording studio at home and continue to work on new music while balancing family life, as they recently welcomed a new child.
