"Doug's been playing slack key since he was very young. He was six years old when he mail ordered his first guitar, a little Roy Rogers and Trigger guitar, and started slacking those keys and playing this beautiful music."

"Slack Key Guitar music was created by the Hawaiians in 1780 when guitars first arrived on the islands. Cattle had been introduced in the 1700s. The king sent an emissary to the mainland to bring someone back to teach Hawaiians how to manage the cattle. Ended up getting several Mexican vacatos, cowboys, to sign contracts, get on ships and come out here to teach the Hawaiians. They brought guitars with them. When they left they gave the Hawaiians their guitars, and it was on those guitars that they created this very unique, beautiful musical art-form known as ki ho'alu or slack key. The first things Hawaiians did when the received the guitars was try strumming them like they had seen the Mexican cowboys do, but it sounded awful because the strings had already started coming out of tune from the standard guitar tuning. So they solved the problem by fiddling their tuners and listening with their ears and their hearts, and finding notes that sounded good on all the strings that sounded good together. They've documented over 75 different tunings."

"Our concerts are played every Friday and Sunday afternoons. Fridays at 4PM and Sundays at 3PM at the Hanalei Community Center, just past the center of Hanalei."
